A giant water bear-like-thingy
Flying beavers, like a flying squirrel! They have big tails and feetsies for paddling through air and gravity-free rivers running through space :D The boyfriend's idea. I bet they'd make awesome dams!

That bird adrift is one of those happy little ideas that I never thought of, but is such an obvious and elegant visual synopsis of the setting. Brilliant!
